Hegra
Hegra is the reason most people come. Its tombs were carved by the Nabataeans, the same people who built Petra, and Qasr al-Farid stands alone in the sand, cut from a single rock. Entry is by guided tour, so book your slot in advance.
Elephant Rock and the canyon

Elephant Rock is a natural arch in the shape of an elephant, with seating around its base. It is at its best at dusk. Further up the valley, Maraya reflects the canyon walls in its mirrored facade.
AlUla Old Town

The Old Town is a maze of mud-brick houses and covered lanes below a hilltop fort. The restored main street has cafés and shops, and it comes alive in the evening.
Where to stay
AlUla has a mix of desert resorts with tented villas, mid-range hotels in town and farm stays among the palm groves. Resorts in the canyons are the most memorable but expensive; hotels in town are the practical choice for shorter trips. Prices rise during winter festivals, so book early.
When to go
Visit between October and March, when days are warm and nights are cool. Summer is very hot and some activities pause.
